body suspension
i just got through watching a show on the discovery channel about body piercings and body modification practices throughout the world. wow. NOTE: i highly recommend that you do not read on if you have a weak stomach or, at the moment, a closed mind one form of body modification is suspension. you stick hooks through your body and suspend yourself in the air a couple of feet above the ground. (some people even like to swing around a bit.) some hang for just minutes while others for days. the people who do this claim to become enlightened, reach higher/different levels of consciousness. they claim that the feeling is euphoric, even an outer-body experience. there are... suicide suspensions - suspended by 2 or more hooks in the back coma suspensions - facing up, hooks in your knees, thighs, stomach, chest and arms (this is what i want to do) o-kee-pa's - suspended by hooks in the chest (and back) etc... in America, they even have an organization, TSD (Traumatic Stress Discipline) any questions?

Some (?) of those people are nuts. I saw another doco with a few of them dangling from some crazy balancing contraption. How many of them stop and go "Wait, I'm hooking myself up like a pig in a meatlocker, this is completely insane!" :)

wow I think that is a little bit off. I think self inflicting pain and harm isn't the greatest thing in the world. But hey, bood luck with that.

Origin of this self-hook-hanging It was "invented" by native Americans (I don't remember a name of that tribe). They used to stick dozens of small hooks under their skin and then hang themselves into the air. The pain was so terrible that those people experienced haluciantions and outer-body experience mentioned by you. This whole thing was meant to turn BOYS into MEN. When a boy wanted to prove that he is ready to become a man, he had to went throught this torturement and the spiritual experience during an unpreceeded suffering enlighted him. Well, I quess I will rather stay a damned 'boy' forever :)
